Rahul Mithaiwala is an orphaned bachelor living in Mumbai. Raised by his grandparents from the age of eight, Rahul’s grandfather Bhishambhar owns a chain of confectionery shops. Before Bhishambhar’s 100th-birthday celebration, Rahul’s friends Bobby and Baman invite him to accompany them on a vacation in Goa, which he accepts. Meanwhile, Bhishambhar dies on the eve of the celebration, just when he witnesses Sachin Tendulkar on TV in a cricket match get dismissed on his 99th run. After Bhishambhar’s death, Rahul’s grandmother Neetu tells Rahul that Bhishambhar wanted his ashes to be divided into two parts—one of each to be immersed in the Ganga and Rameswaram. She asks Rahul to take the ashes to Rameswaram and disperse them. Reluctantly, he accepts her request but is also eager to attend the Goa trip.
Rahul, Bobby and Baman plan to dump the ashes at Goa but Neetu wants to see him off, forcing Rahul to travel by train. He books a single ticket on the Chennai Express, planning to meet Bobby and Baman along the way, at Kalyan Junction station. However, Rahul forgets to take the ashes, and he almost misses the train when he returns to collect them. As Rahul tries to leave the train, he notices a young woman running to board it. He helps her and four other people board the moving train, but the train leaves the station before he can get off.
Rahul tries to flirt with the woman, who starts communicating by singing parodies of Hindi film songs, and explains that the four men are trying to kidnap her. Rahul lends her his mobile phone so that she can contact her friends, but the men with her grab it and throw it from the train. Rahul is annoyed but says nothing because the men are carrying weapons. Rahul tells the Travelling Ticket Examiner about them, but they push the inspector into a river below a bridge. Panicked, Rahul learns that the four men are her cousins and that her real name is Meenalochni “Meenamma” Azhagusundaram. She is fleeing from a forced marriage to a ruffian named Tangaballi. Meenamma’s father, Durgeshwara “Durgesh” Azhagusundaram, is a powerful headman of the local mafia in Tamil Nadu.
Meenamma takes Rahul to Durgesh and introduces Rahul as her lover. Tangaballi challenges Rahul to a duel that Rahul unknowingly accepts, due to his lack of knowledge in Tamil. On the night of the duel, Rahul escapes with the help of a local policeman, Shamsher, but he ends up on a ship with Sri Lankan terrorists and smugglers. A gun battle ensues between the police force and the terrorists. When the police officers investigate and take Rahul into custody, he tells his story and ends up back in Komban.
Terrified and once again surrounded by Durgesh’s sickle-wielding henchmen, Rahul pretends to take Meenamma hostage and escapes with her in Durgesh’s car, battling Durgesh’s men. When the car breaks down, Rahul and Meenamma quarrel and part ways. Rahul, not knowing which way to go, returns to Meenamma, who takes him to the Vidhamba village. Meenamma tells the villagers that they are a married couple who needs protection and rest, to which the villagers agree.
Meenamma then realises that she has fallen in love with Rahul. When Rahul plans to sneak away, she argues, not wanting to earn the villagers’ distrust. Tangaballi catches Rahul as he tries to leave, but the villagers help them escape again. Meenamma persuades Rahul to disperse Bhishambhar’s ashes and travels with him to Rameswaram, where they complete the rites. On their way back, Rahul realises that he has fallen in love with Meenamma, and does not tell her where they are going. He takes Meenamma back to Durgesh and tries to make him understand and honour Meenamma’s wish. He also tells Meenamma that he loves her.
Rahul tells Tangaballi and his goons that he is ready for the fight this time. In the fight that follows, Rahul is severely injured but emerges victorious. Durgesh and Tangaballi reform, accepting that the love of a common man like Rahul is bigger than their physical ability and political influence. Durgesh allows Rahul to marry Meena. Rahul then leaves a message that love knows no regional or language barriers and that with a strong heart, there is no limit to what the common man can add.

Jassi meets Billu in a temple as the villagers tell Jassi that Billu will tell him all about the land. Billu is accompanied by his family and Sukh. Sameer “Sam” Kapoor, a male nurse and Kunal Chopra, a fashion photographer are fun-loving, womanising bachelors in Miami. They first meet at a friend’s place after a night out with girls and run into each other again when they are interested in renting the same apartment. The apartment belongs to Neha Melwani, who works for Verve. She lives there with her aunt, who refuses to sublet the apartment to either of them since Neha wants girls as flatmates.
After meeting a gay soldier, Sam persuades a reluctant Kunal to pretend that they are lovers so they can rent the apartment. They regret their decision when they meet Neha since they are attracted to her. The three become good friends, and Sam and Kunal fall in love with her.
As Sam and Kunal continue the charade, Sam convinces Kunal to apply for a domestic partnership with him, as Kunal is a US citizen and Sam is not. Unbeknownst to them, the approval letter is sent to Rani, Sam’s conservative mother, in London.
Neha’s gay boss, Murli “M”, resigns as Verve‘s editor and must choose his successor. To impress him (and hopefully get the job), Neha invites him for dinner at her house and asks Sam and Kunal to entertain him. A US immigration agent visits them for a surprise inspection and joins the party. Chaos ensues when Rani arrives from London to confront her son about his newfound sexuality. Sam tries to deny his relationship with Kunal, but the immigration agent affirms that they are a couple. M becomes upset because Neha had told him Sam and Kunal were both single, and leaves.
At Neha’s office the following day, M announces that Abhimanyu “Abhi” Singh will be the new editor. Neha, upset at being passed over for promotion, goes home and is consoled by Rani; in turn, she helps Rani accept her son’s sexuality. Kunal and Sam help Neha with a project assigned by Abhi, who is impressed with her work. They later take Neha on separate dates, both telling her that they love her. Neha convinced that they are gay, sees the dates as friendly outings. When Abhi and Neha begin dating, Sam and Kunal sabotage the budding relationship by giving Abhi inappropriate advice; this irritates Neha, and she and Abhi quarrel. When Neha discovers Kunal and Sam’s plan, she misinterprets it as jealousy of Abhi. Sam and Kunal redirect their efforts into frightening Veer, Abhi’s five-year-old son, about his future with Neha. During a basketball game, Neha discovers that Abhi plans to propose to her and asks for Kunal and Sameer’s advice. They ask her to turn him down, admitting that their homosexuality is a ruse and they both love her. Veer tells Abhi about his fears, and during the game, Abhi breaks up with Neha. She tearfully evicts Kunal and Sameer from her apartment, and resigns from Verve.
A few months later Kunal and Sam meet in court, where they are picking up residence permits. Recognising the value of their friendship with Neha and each other, they reconcile. They find Neha at a fashion show and try to apologise, but she refuses to see them. Unaware of Neha and Abhi’s break-up, they ask about the wedding and Neha tells them about Veer’s fears. Kunal and Sam admit that they manipulated the boy, angering Neha and Abhi. Kunal and Sam climb onto the stage and beg Neha’s forgiveness. The crowd encourages them to beg on their knees, say that they love her and blow her kisses, but nothing softens her. When the crowd tells them to kiss each other, they refuse. Neha and Abhi turn to leave, and Kunal kisses a reluctant Sam. Abhi and Neha are both amazed by the lengths to which they will go to regain her trust; Neha forgives them. Kunal and Sam then get down on their knees and propose to Abhi on her behalf. Amused, Abhi agrees. Two months later, Neha playfully asks Kunal and Sam if they felt anything for each other when they pretended to be gay; they say “no”, remembering their kiss.
The film starts with reporters asking film star Nazeem Khan if he is in a live-in relationship. He replies that it is his life and he can do whatever he wants to. The film then shifts to Mathura where Vishnu Trivedi, a failing politician wants a ban on live-in relationships. He goes to a local news channel in their town to get his daughter Rashmi an internship. There, Rashmi is introduced to the channel’s star reporter Vinod “Guddu” Shukla and his friend Abbas Sheikh. Rashmi starts working with them and Guddu and Rashmi fall for each other. Later, Guddu and his eldest brother Vikas have an argument about who should get married first. The next day, Guddu meets Rashmi and proposes to her, but she says that she doesn’t want to get married and wants to get to know Guddu first. She suggests a live-in relationship but Guddu doesn’t want to be in a live-in relationship because it’s not allowed in his family as it is not a part of their culture, and on top of that, he is afraid of Vishnu’s position and stance. The two later seek help from Abbas and he suggests trying the live-in relationship during a scheduled 20-day business trip to Gwalior. Rashmi eagerly agrees but Guddu is still reluctant.
The three head for Gwalior and are able to find an apartment with the help from a local. The next morning, Guddu chases her around the apartment and from the outside, their neighbor Mrs. Srivastava watches. Suspicious, she goes to their apartment and asks Rashmi how long they have been married. Confused, they both look at each other, and mix up answers. Almost certain that they are in a live-in relationship, Mrs. Srivastava leaves and begins spilling the beans to everyone, and a unanimous decision is called for to oust them from the apartment. Guddu and Rashmi overhear this and come up with fake photos of their wedding to put around the house as proof. The next morning, all the neighbors are shocked to see the wedding pictures. Mrs. Srivastava tries to convince them but in vain. Guddu’s eldest brother Varun’s brother-in-law Babulal sees them indulging in public display of affection. Babulal follows them, sees the fake wedding pictures and assumes that the two eloped and got married.
The next morning, Babulal brings Guddu’s entire family to their house including Guddu’s mother Shakuntala and father Badriprasad. His family sees the wedding pictures and go back to Mathura to tell Vishnu about the two. Vishnu is okay with it and says that they should be glad that they got married and weren’t in a live-in relationship.
Rashmi then goes to live with Guddu and his family because everyone thinks that they are now married. Rashmi dislikes lying to everyone and asks Guddu to quickly get themselves married. The two try to get married multiple times but in vain.
Finally, they decide to get married in an anonymous public marriage event. Unfortunately, Vishnu arrived to the event as a chief guest. He recognises Guddu and ultimately both the sides, Shuklas and Trivedis reach the venue and get to know about the truth. Guddu and Rashmi then accept that they are not married.
Guddu explains to Vishnu that the reason why Vishnu keeps losing the elections is because majority of the voting group is the new generation who believe in modern methods such as live-in relationships and opposing their methods equals to lack of support from them. Thus, he convinces Vishnu to stop opposing live-in relationships. Everyone finally get Guddu and Rashmi married.
